Modern tripods are made out of aluminium, though the legs are made out of wood. It has several joints to allow the camera to move in different directions, yet still standing in one spot and giving a smooth and stable effect. It's very often used to set the environment where the movie or video is being filmed. Tripods have the disadvantage of being heavy and bulky, but they are one of the most popular pieces of equipment in the filming business.
